Medical emergency first
In a medical emergency, call 911: the national 9-1-1 emergency system covers Samaná province and dispatches ambulances. You can also go straight to the nearest emergency department. Our form is neither an emergency service nor a medical consultation: we will contact you on WhatsApp, but we cannot promise a response time. See also our emergency page.
Please do not put detailed medical information in the form (symptoms, medical history, treatments or results). Just tell us what you are looking for: a lab, an X-ray or ultrasound, a consultation, and your preferred language. You will discuss your health directly with the professionals.
Services covered
- Emergency room: care for urgent cases, round the clock at facilities that have an emergency department. Find out which one is closest as soon as you arrive.
- Consultations: general practice and specialties, depending on the facility.
- Lab tests: blood tests and other tests, usually with a doctor's referral.
- Imaging: X-rays and ultrasound, depending on the equipment available.
- Ambulance: in an emergency, call 911; for a planned transfer, speak to the facility.
Good to know in Las Terrenas
The Dominican health system includes public hospitals and private clinics, with different services, opening hours and payment methods. Depending on your needs, a specialist test or a hospital stay may require a transfer to another town; Santo Domingo is several hours away by road. Do not wait until the day you need it to find the nearest facility: locate it in advance, especially if you are travelling with children or older relatives.
Before you go
- Bring ID (passport or cédula) and your insurance card: Dominican ARS, travel or international insurance.
- Bring prescriptions, a list of your medicines and any relevant reports, to hand over in person.
- Bring a means of payment, and ask whether a deposit is required on admission and which payment methods are accepted (cash, card, transfer).
- If you have travel insurance, tell your insurer as soon as possible: some require prior approval for a hospital stay.
- If you do not speak Spanish, try to bring someone who can interpret.
Lab tests and imaging: practical tips
Ask in advance whether you need a referral, whether any preparation is required and what time to arrive. Find out when and how you will receive the results (on paper, as a PDF or on WhatsApp) and keep a copy for your own doctor, here or back home. For an X-ray or ultrasound, ask for the written report and, if possible, the images.
Questions to ask the facility
- Do you accept my insurance, or will I pay first and claim later?
- How much does the test or consultation cost?
- Do I need a referral or an appointment?
- Does anyone on the staff speak French or English?
- How and when will I receive the results?
Good practice
Keep invoices, results and reports: your insurer and your doctor will need them. The facilities and professionals in our directory are independent: they have no employment link with ProTerrenas. Check that the doctors treating you hold an exequátur, the licence to practise in the Dominican Republic.
Send a request
For anything non-urgent, just tell us which service you are looking for (lab, imaging, consultation) and your preferred language, using our clinic request form. Only your WhatsApp number is required. Our team will contact you and point you in the right direction. In an emergency: 911. More tips in our guides.
Frequently asked questions
Does the form replace the emergency room or a consultation?
No. It is only a way to ask for directions to a facility or service when the need is not urgent. We do not give medical advice. In an emergency, call 911 or go straight to the nearest emergency department.
How do I get an ambulance?
In an emergency, call 911, which coordinates ambulances. For a non-urgent transfer, for example from one facility to another, ask the facility directly how it is arranged and what it costs.
How much do lab tests or an ultrasound cost?
It depends on the facility and the test. The site only shows a fee when it was collected from public sources and is shown with its date; otherwise you will see 'on request'. Some tests require a doctor's referral, so check in advance, along with what your insurance covers.
Is ProTerrenas a clinic?
No. We are a matching service: we receive your request, contact you on WhatsApp and point you to an independent facility or professional. ProTerrenas provides no healthcare and cannot guarantee any facility's availability or fees.
