Medical emergency first

In a medical emergency, call 911: the national 9-1-1 emergency system covers Samaná province. You can also go straight to the nearest emergency department. Our form is neither an emergency service nor a medical consultation: we will contact you on WhatsApp, but we cannot promise a response time. See also our emergency page.

Please do not put any medical information in the form: no symptoms, no treatments, no photos of prescriptions. Just tell us what you are looking for: a pharmacy that delivers, one that opens late, and your preferred language.

What this category covers

  • Medicines: prescription and over-the-counter medicines, advice from the pharmacist, hygiene and first-aid products.
  • On-duty pharmacy: the farmacia de turno that serves customers outside normal hours, on a rota.
  • Home delivery: where the pharmacy offers it, to your house, villa or hotel.

The on-duty pharmacy (farmacia de turno)

Pharmacies take turns, so the one open at night or on Sunday is not always the same. Check locally which pharmacy is on duty, and make a note of it when you arrive if you are travelling with children or taking regular medication. Opening hours at other pharmacies vary too, so ask each one directly.

Travelling with medicines

  • Keep medicines in their original packaging, with the leaflet.
  • Bring your prescription, ideally listing the generic names, and a translation if possible.
  • Pack enough for your whole stay, and keep some in your hand luggage.
  • Some medicines do not tolerate heat, so follow the storage instructions on the leaflet. During power cuts (apagones), keep an eye on anything that must be refrigerated and ask the pharmacist for advice.

Getting medicines delivered

If the pharmacy delivers, give a precise address and clear landmarks, as not every street has a name or number. Ask whether the prescription needs to be shown, have payment ready (cash or card, depending on the pharmacy), and before the delivery rider leaves, check that it is the right product, at the right strength, in intact packaging. If you manage a villa, leave your guests a pharmacy contact and remind them of the 911 number.

Good habits

  • Do not self-medicate: ask a pharmacist or doctor, even for over-the-counter products.
  • Check the expiry date and that the packaging is intact.
  • Buy medicines from a pharmacy, not from informal sellers.
  • Keep receipts and invoices if you want to claim from your insurer (ARS or travel insurance).

Questions to ask the pharmacy

  • Do you deliver to my area? What does it cost and how long does it take?
  • Can I pay on delivery, in cash or by card?
  • Do you have this product, or an equivalent with the same active ingredient?
  • Can you give me an invoice for my insurer?
  • What are your opening hours, and when are you on duty?

Good practice

Always follow your doctor's prescription and the pharmacist's advice. The pharmacies in our directory are independent: they are not owned by ProTerrenas, and we cannot guarantee their opening hours, stock or prices.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the on-duty pharmacy?

On-duty pharmacies (farmacias de turno) take turns, so the list is not fixed. Check locally, for example from notices posted at pharmacies or by asking where you are staying. In a medical emergency, do not wait: call 911.

Will I find the medicine I take at home?

Brand names differ from one country to another. Bring your prescription showing the active ingredient (the generic name) and the dose your doctor prescribed, and the pharmacist will tell you what is available. Do not switch or stop a treatment without asking your doctor.

Do medicines cost the same in every pharmacy?

No, prices vary between pharmacies and by brand, so compare if you can. The site only shows a price when it was collected from public sources and is shown with its date; otherwise you will see 'on request'.

Does the form replace medical advice?

No. It is only a way to find a pharmacy, such as one that delivers to your area. We do not give medical advice or dosages. For any question about a medicine, ask a pharmacist or a doctor.

Does ProTerrenas sell or deliver medicines?

No. We are a matching service: we receive your request, contact you on WhatsApp and point you to an independent pharmacy. Sales, prices and delivery are arranged directly with the pharmacy.
