What wears out doors and windows in Las Terrenas
Salt air corrodes poorly protected frames, hinges, locks, screws and rollers, and ungalvanised iron bars rust very quickly. Wind-driven tropical rain finds every weak spot: badly finished seals, cracked silicone, blocked drainage slots in the tracks. The hurricane season, from June to November, brings strong gusts and flying debris.
Humidity makes wood swell, so doors start to stick and closed cupboards smell musty. Termites (comején) attack untreated timber and some boards. And the sun dries out seals and fades cheaper finishes.
Planning your project
- Measurements: these should be taken on site by whoever makes the units, because openings are not always square.
- Glass: laminated glass stays in place if it breaks, while toughened glass shatters into small, less dangerous pieces. Ask which suits each use (large openings, balustrades, showers).
- Hardware: near the sea, choose marine-grade stainless steel (A4, also called 316) or aluminium rather than plain zinc-plated steel.
- Kitchens and closets: choose moisture-resistant boards (marine plywood, moisture-resistant panels), treated timber, and allow for ventilation.
- Insect screens and security bars: include insect screens from the start, and ask how the security bars (rejas) will be fixed, what rust treatment and paint they get, and whether they go inside or outside the opening. Well-anchored, well-protected bars last far longer in salt air.
- Lead times: frame profiles, glass and fittings sometimes come from Santo Domingo or from abroad. Get the lead time in writing.
- Installation: check whether it is included, along with making good the walls, repainting and taking away the old units.
Looking after doors and windows
Rinse frames and hardware that catch sea spray with fresh water from time to time, lubricate locks, hinges and rollers, and clear the drainage slots in the tracks before the rainy season. Touch up the paint on security bars as soon as rust appears, and air your closets to keep mould at bay.
Questions to ask before you accept a quote
- Who will take the measurements on site, and when?
- Which frame profile, glass and hardware do you suggest?
- Are installation, sealing and removal of the old units included?
- How long will manufacture and installation take?
- Do you offer any guarantee, and what exactly does it cover?
- How do you want to be paid: deposit, balance on installation, cash or transfer?
Good practice
Ask for a detailed written quote, do not pay the full amount before installation, and ask to see previous work. The professionals in our directory are independent: they are not ProTerrenas employees. If you fit fixed security bars, keep at least one exit that can be opened easily from the inside in case of fire.

Frequently asked questions
How much do made-to-measure windows cost in Las Terrenas?
It depends on the sizes, the material, the frame profile, the glass, the hardware and the installation, so this work is priced by quote. Where the site shows a rate, it was collected from public sources and is shown with its date; otherwise you will see 'on quote'. To compare fairly, ask for several quotes on the same basis: same openings, same glass, installation included or not.
Aluminium, PVC or wood: which is best near the sea?
Each has its strengths. Powder-coated or anodised aluminium with stainless steel hardware copes well with salt air if it is maintained. PVC does not rust, but it needs to be a grade made for strong tropical sun. Wood looks warm but needs treating against damp and termites (comején) and regular upkeep. Ask for advice based on how exposed each side of the house is.
Will my windows withstand a hurricane?
That depends on the frame, the glass and above all how the units are fixed into the walls. Ask the manufacturer which standards or tests it claims for its products, and consider storm shutters or panels (tormenteras) for large openings. When a hurricane warning is issued, follow the authorities' instructions.
