  • Fresh produce: greengrocers, stalls and sellers of local, seasonal fruit and vegetables.

Supermarkets and colmados: how it works

The colmado is part of neighbourhood life: people drop in for a bottle of water, eggs, rice, a phone top-up or a bag of ice, and many will deliver by motorbike after a quick call or WhatsApp message. For a big shop, a wide choice of fresh food or imported products, a supermarket is more practical. Opening hours vary from one shop to another, especially on Sundays and public holidays, so check locally.

Practical tips

  • Water: keep bottled water or large jugs (botellones) at home; an empty jug is usually swapped for a full one.
  • Fruit and vegetables: go for what is in season, which is often fresher and cheaper than imported produce, and wash everything well.
  • Imported products: cheese, cured meats, wine and foreign brands cost more and are not always in stock.
  • Payment: colmados mostly work in cash; many supermarkets take cards, but check before you fill your trolley. Keep some small change in pesos for deliveries.
  • Delivery address: give clear landmarks (the villa name, the colour of the gate, a well-known place nearby), as not every street has a name or number.
  • Fish and meat: ask where it comes from and when it was caught or delivered, and get it into the fridge quickly.

Power cuts and the cold chain

Power cuts (apagones) can interrupt refrigeration, both in shops and at home. Pick up frozen and chilled food last, use a cool bag for the journey and put everything in the fridge as soon as you get back. Look at the condition of products: frozen food that has thawed and refrozen often shows ice crystals or misshapen packaging. If you have any doubt about fresh food, do not eat it.

Groceries ready before you arrive

Villa owners, property managers and concierges often ask us how to stock the fridge before guests arrive. Prepare a precise list with alternative brands in case something is out of stock, set a budget, and agree on how payment will work and who will receive the delivery. Ask for the receipt or invoice, and a photo of the stocked fridge if you are abroad. For fresh food, schedule delivery as close to arrival as possible.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a supermarket and a colmado?

A colmado is the Dominican neighbourhood corner shop: basics, drinks, ice, phone top-ups, and often motorbike delivery nearby ('delivery'). A supermarket has a wider range, more fresh food and imported products. Many people use both.

Are prices the same everywhere?

No, they vary from shop to shop, and imported products usually cost more than local ones, so compare. The site only shows a price when it was collected from public sources and is shown with its date; otherwise you will see 'on request'.

Can I drink the tap water?

For drinking, people generally use bottled water or large refillable jugs (botellones), which many colmados and distributors deliver. Ask at your accommodation and, if in doubt, use the same water to wash fruit and vegetables you will eat raw.

Does ProTerrenas do the shopping for me?

No. We are a matching service: we receive your request, contact you on WhatsApp and point you to an independent shop, delivery service or concierge. The order, price and payment are arranged directly with them.
